This couple is trying to separate fact from fiction over Roe vs. Wade

Roe v. Wade Overturned: Separating Fact from Fiction: Ever since Roe v. Wade was overturned in June 2022, people seeking answers have had to do their own research to find how it impacted their states, and it can be difficult to find accurate, reliable information.

In this article we dispel some common myths surrounding the decision and explain what it means for women wondering about their pregnancy options.

Myth #1 Abortion is Illegal in All 50 States

Many people were concerned that abortion would become illegal in all 50 states overnight. However, the Supreme Court ruling struck down abortion as a federally-protected right only. This means that the authority to restrict or protect abortion access was then turned over to each state.

In North Carolina, abortion is currently legal until the pregnancy is viable, unless the mother’s life is in danger.

Myth #2 Contraception is Illegal

Contraceptives are legal everywhere in the United States, including North Carolina. In our state, you can get birth control without a prescription; however, the pharmacists must notify the patient’s doctor within 72 hours.

Myth #3: Women Won’t Receive the Medical Care They Need

There are some claims that, especially in states that restrict abortion access, doctors are going to withhold medical care for women with birth or pregnancy-related complications, such as a high-risk or ectopic pregnancy.

No law restricting abortion prohibits women from receiving the care they need. For example, the law restricting abortion in the state of North Carolina that bans abortions after viability (typically around 20 weeks) makes an exception if the mother’s life is at risk.

Next Steps

When facing an unplanned pregnancy, it can be daunting to figure out what the best option or even what the first step is. At Hope First, we offer no-cost ultrasounds.

Ultrasounds are an essential health screening that can confirm the age and viability of the pregnancy (both criteria for qualifying for an abortion). Ultrasounds can also eliminate the possibility of an ectopic pregnancy.
