Can I change my mind about the adoption?

It’s normal to have many questions about your pregnancy decision, no matter how confident you feel when you make it.

If you have chosen adoption but have not yet signed any paperwork (even after birth), it’s still possible to change your mind.

However, this cannot usually be undone if you have already terminated your parental rights with the final adoption paperwork.

You alone know the right choice for you and your pregnancy, so understanding the ins and outs of adoption can give you more confidence in deciding if this is the best choice for you.

Hope First can discuss adoption with you and provide referrals to reputable agencies.

Preparing Yourself For Adoption

Whether you have already contacted an adoption agency or are still weighing your options, ensure you understand your rights.

As the biological parent, you alone can choose adoption, including who the adoptive parents are. Additionally, you can explore various post-adoption plans, such as:

  • Open Adoption: You maintain a relationship with the adoptive family and have a role in your child’s life.
  • Semi-Open Adoption: A third party, such as an adoption attorney or agency, facilitates communication with the adoptive family.
  • Closed Adoption: You have no contact with the adoptive family, remain anonymous, and all identifying records are sealed.

Note: Post-adoption contact plans are resolved outside the court and are not legally binding in North Carolina.

Any pregnancy decision, including adoption, can be difficult because it comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages. An adoption counselor, as well as loved ones who understand your situation, and even a mental health professional can be a part of the team that helps you feel supported and in a position to make the healthiest and wisest pregnancy choice.

You are entirely free to choose adoption; no one can force you. It’s your decision. You should also not be expected to cover the costs of adoption services (this is normally covered by the agency or the adoptive family). You may also be eligible for financial and material support during adoption.
