Throughout my life I have been told…
“You are the sweetest person I have ever met.” ” You are unlovable.”
“You are so small.” “You really need to lose some weight.”
“You’re hair always looks so good.”
“Do you really like wearing your hair like that?” “You’re bossy.”
“You really need to learn to be more assertive.”
AHHHHHH!!
When you lay in bed at night and think about all those conversations, it’s a good chance you might go completely crazy trying to figure out, who am I?
We often try to figure out who we are based on what people say about us. It starts when we are young. Our parent’s tell us, our friends tell us, and later on our spouses tell us. We tend to think if someone said it, it must true. However, sometimes that can be the farthest things from the truth. Just because people say things about us, it doesn’t make them true.
“WHAT OTHERS SAY ABOUT YOU SAYS MORE ABOUT THEM THAN YOU.”
One night when I was lying in bed thinking about who everyone says I am… It came to me, they aren’t telling me who I am, they are telling me who they are. People see in you what they wished they were, what they struggle with, and even what they are jealous of. Often people that don’t know who they truly are, try to tell others what they are.
If you struggle with the same question, “Who am I?” You’re not alone. We all have moments where we ask ourselves the same question. I have a little bit of advice that just might help.
1. Get alone in a quiet place away from all distractions (yes that means your cell phone) and make a list of your likes and dislikes.
2.If you are religious, contemplate what your beliefs really are.
3.Take a good long look in the mirror and see what you like about yourself.
4.Read up on the issues our world is facing and determine what you believe.
